A Letter from our outgoing President

Dear Smithies,

When I moved to Charlottesville in 2009, the first thing I did was look for the local Smith club.  Everywhere I’ve lived, Smith women have been there to help.  The same was true in Charlottesville.  Although the club was inactive when I arrived, by 2010 several alumnae came together “to get things going” again.  Thank you to all of you who helped, attended events, paid dues and responded to our mailings.  It’s been a real privilege to serve as your president for the past 5 years.

A vital aspect of leadership is finding someone to follow.  I’m glad to report that Shea Zwerver, Nancy Hunt and Julia Hayden are continuing club activities.  Shea will be our new president and Nancy will be our Treasurer.  A big thanks to Julia for staying on as secretary.  I’m stepping down as president to take on other volunteer endeavors.  My 9 year-old wants to be a Girl Scout and I want to have this experience so I’ve decided to be a troop leader to 12 girls in Western Albemarle County.  It’s going to be an adventure!

Of course, I love Smith, deeply appreciate being an alumna, and most of all look forward to seeing you all soon.  Please call on me if I can be helpful as a member the Smith Club of Charlottesville.

How to Update Your Contact Information with Smith

Smith College maintains an online alumnae directory. We encourage all alumnae to update their contact information (including current e-mail address) directly with the Alumnae Association of Smith College. This will ensure that you receive all Smith College Club information including our newsletters and invitations to our events!

To update your contact information, please do one of the following:

1) Use the Alumnae Online Directory

Visit the AASC website and login on the left side of the page under “Alumnae Directory.” If you are a new user, enter your last name and your Smith ID number (your ID number, starting with AV, can be found over your name on the mailing label of your SAQ or it can be requested from alumnae@smith.edu) and follow steps to set up an account.

2) Fill out the form

If you’d like to work with us to set up an event (host a tea at your house, organize an outing, et cetera), please drop us a line at SCcharlottesville@gmail.com

Finally – we have a facebook group:  Smith College Club of Charlottesville

We’re Rebuilding! Join Us!

Our club is dedicated to furthering the well-being of, and demonstrating the excellence of, Smith College. We serve as a vehicle by which College alumnae of the Charlottesville area may join together to strengthen the relationship of alumnae to the College and to each other, to further the interests of the College in the local community by supplying information and seeking out qualified applicants, and to carry out public relations and fund-raising programs for the benefit of the College.  We also wish to have some fun and enjoy the company of smart women.

We are independent of, but affiliated with, the Alumnae Association of Smith College.

Whether you are an alumna, a current student, or a prospective one (or otherwise connected to Smith!) … Welcome!

Where we are

The Smith College Club of Charlottesville (Virginia) territory stretches from Madison, Culpeper, and Orange in the east all the way to the West Virginia Border and from Winchester in the north to Danville in the south. It includes the cities of Charlottesville, Lexington, Harrisonburg, Staunton, Blacksburg, Roanoke, Stephens City, Berryville, and many more.

We know that making the trek to Charlottesville is particularly long for some of you, so we’re happy to help alumnae who are hours away from Charlottesville connect with alumnae more local to you. Drop us an email, and we’ll see what we can do to help.

You are on our mailing list if your address in the Smith Directory/Alumnae Records is in this region. If you provided an email address, we will contact you only via e-mail (which we prefer to use for a variety of practical, economic, and green reasons); if there is no email address, you will get a letter once a year telling you about membership options, and giving you the opportunity to opt into receiving printed notifications.  We will stop sending you these year letters on request.

When you move, please update the college so our lists are updated accordingly. You will keep getting emails from our group if the alumnae directory thinks you still live in the area!
