Spring Lecture: Smith Professor Reid Bertone-Johnson

On Saturday, April 28, the Club welcomed Reid Bertone-Johnson, Smith Professor of Landscape Studies, to Cleveland at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes.

He shared how he works with Smith students to design sustainable ways for residents of the Connecticut River Valley to access and protect the Mill River, a portion of which runs through the Smith campus, forming the iconic Paradise Pond.

The light-filled room overlooking the preserve, Marjorie’s cheerful spring table cloths, and the gleeful greeting of one another set the perfect stage for an amazing educational exchange.

The interdisciplinary work that Reid and his students are doing was inspiring and encouraged many to think outside the box – not only in the way we look at public landscaping, but also in the way we think of collaborative efforts in our varied professions and interests.

In addition to roughly 20 alumane in attendance, a number of community members involved in sustainable aquaculture and regional park systems contributed to a stimulating Q&A session.
