An Evening Among the Glass Flowers: Botany, Women’s Education, and the Founding of Smith College
Thusrday, March 26, 6:00-8:00pm
Cambridge (Home of local alum; location given upon RSVP)
Register ($10)
The study of plants held a prominent role in the early curriculum of Smith College at a time when scientific training for women was uncommon. Join Tim Johnson, Director of the Smith College Botanic Garden, on a journey back in time to learn about the political debate over women’s access to botanical training that raged in the century prior to Smith’s founding, how those debates shaped the prominence of the sciences in Smith’s curriculum, and why the college’s decision to develop the campus as a scientifically organized botanic garden was subversive and ahead of its time.
Afterwards, mingle in the galleries of the Harvard Museum of Natural History, and visit one of Harvard’s most famous treasures: the Ware Collection of Blaschka Glass Models of Plants, commonly known as the “Glass Flowers.” This unique collection of over 4,300 stunningly realistic models, representing more than 780 plant species, was created by glass artisans Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka, a father and son team of Czech glass artists. Read more about this collection at hmnh.harvard.edu/glass-flowers. Event co-presented by the Botanic Garden of Smith College and its Friends Advisory Committee. Light refreshments will be available.
If you anticipate needing any type of accommodation, please email: lectures@hmsc.harvard.edu. Smithies, Friends of the Botanic Garden, and guests are welcome.
