LUCY LIPPARD
Lucy Lippard participated in this symposium in February 2010 and was one of the keynote speakers. Some of her comments from her talk are quoted here.
“The anti-Vietnam war movement and conceptual art, then feminism and women’s art, were the transformative experiences that made me what I am today…My own taste leans toward art that comes to grips with life, and sometimes intervenes.”
“Feminist artists are concerned with the the global class struggle, with racism, with peace, with environmental justice…women are more likely to make more effective public art, to go out of their way to communicate and collaborate with their audiences.”
“Artists frame what people see. Society produces nature but artists should be able to produce new angles on seeing nature that could in turn affect the way we treat what we consider the natural world.”
Lucy’s latest book, Down Country: The Tano of the Galisteo Basin, 1250-1782, was recently published by Museum of New Mexico Press.
MICHAELA CAHILLANE nominated for College award
Michaela Cahillane, daughter of Mike Kiley Cahillane and Administrative Assistant, French Studies, was recently nominated for an Employee Spotlight Award. These awards were established to recognize exceptional contributions of individuals at Smith. Employees are nominated by other employees; Michaela was nominated by Mary Ellen Birkett, Professor, French Studies, and Ellen Watson, Director, English Language and Literature. The nomination reads, in part:
“In a year as temp, and in her semester and a half as administrative assistant for the Poetry Center and French Studies, Michaela has not only made both groups run more smoothly than ever before, but has streamlined the work of two programs, bringing them together as almost one administrative group. As the flawlessly professional and welcoming public face of our programs for students, faculty, and visitors, Michaela enhances our participation in campus activities. And she does so by consistently going the extra mile.”
